Imagine paddling in near-total darkness, a sky full of stars above you, and every dip of your paddle sends a flash of electric blue through the water. That is bioluminescence night kayaking in Havelock, and for many travellers it ends up being the most memorable hour of their Andaman trip.
This guided experience takes you onto the dark waters around Havelock Island (officially Swaraj Dweep) with a trained guide. You will learn the basics on the spot, paddle at an easy pace, and look for the faint glow that tiny plankton create when the water is disturbed. No experience is needed.
One honest note before you book: the glow is a natural event. It is brightest on dark, moonless nights and is never guaranteed. We explain how to give yourself the best odds below.
Why try night kayaking in Havelock?
• A different side of Havelock. Most people know it for Radhanagar Beach, diving and snorkelling. At night, it feels like another island altogether.
• Dark skies. With little light pollution, the stars can be spectacular even if the plankton are shy.
• Calm, gentle paddling. Kayaking is easy to pick up, and a guide stays with the group.
• Something for every traveller. Couples, friends, families with older teens and solo travellers all enjoy it.
• Photos? Honestly, not really. Phone cameras struggle with the faint glow. Put the phone away and enjoy the moment.
Best time for bioluminescence in Havelock
• Season: October to May is the main window, because the sea is calmer and the weather clearer. Travellers often rate November to February the best.
• Moon phase: The darker the sky, the better the glow. Aim for the days around the new moon. A bright full moon washes out the effect, so check the moon calendar before you pick your date.
• Weather: Clear nights beat cloudy or rough ones. If conditions are unsafe, your operator may reschedule.
• Timing: Slots can vary by night and tide.
Our advice: plan two nights around the new moon if your trip allows. If one night is cancelled for weather or tide, you have a backup.
